Jane Kampei, a member of the local community, who was also hosting trainees for the prior residential training at the Mara Training Center, discusses the importance of bringing the ultrasound scanning services to this rural community. She delivered her own baby before ITW arrived in town and barely made it to the health center at night by motorbike. The nearest referral hospital is 50 km on a very bad and dangerous road, usually on a motorbike, with a trip for women in labor that can take 2-3 hours! It is not uncommon for women with complications in labor to die in the middle of the night, in the mud, by the side of the road. The ITW ultrasound program helps to identify the complications early enough for planned safe deliveries.
