Kristen DeStigter was the guest speaker with over 100 men and women from the community in attendance. The message was focused on early detection of cervical and breast cancer. Complications of pregnancy and childbirth contribute to 358,000 maternal deaths annually and the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that breast cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death for women in East Africa. In Uganda, women present with breast cancer at a very young age (about 20 years younger on average than in the USA) and with very advanced stage disease.
Kristen also spoke about the importance of good antenatal care. There were many questions and lots of good discussion with the audience. Cathy, one of the ITW sonographers at Bugongi clinic, did the translation.
