Today Mary, Lena and I surveyed many Ugandan girls and women on their knowledge of ultrasound scans. They knew what an ultrasound looked like but they didn’t know any details. We taught them what ultrasound does and how it works. For example, you get the images of a fetus by the sound waves bouncing back into the probe, which puts the image onto the computer. We taught them a ton of anatomy and physiology.
They picked up very well on understanding the concept of ultrasound. Many girls took notes, and had direct eye contact with us while we were talking. I talked to the girls after the teaching and about 6 or 7 girls out of 12 wanted to be doctors. It is amazing the goals these girls have for themselves – very inspiring. It was a great experience that I will never forget.
